How did Mozart’s mum get him out of bed?

I have just started taking piano lessons again.  I can bash out the rock numbers but want to explore the classical repertoire.  My teacher Malcolm is a most entertaining fellow and always has some interesting anecdotes about the pieces or the composers.  Today he told me that Mozart would not get out of bed in the morning so his mum devised a really great way to get him from under the covers which worked every time.  Your task is to guess what this was.  The first person who posts the correct answer gets a free signed copy of my book Grow Your Own Carrot.

presumably something to do with music, or at least songs. i expect she might have started to play a few notes on the piano, possibly badly to provoke him

I don’t know but Beethoven’s housekeeper discovered the only way to get the genius out of bed was to play a scale on the piano and deliberately leave out the last note – Beethoven couldn’t bare the torture of hearing an incomplete octave and would have to get up and play the missing note.

I seem to remember it was something like she played only half a tune on the piano which frustrated him so much that he would get up and finish it?

“To get him out of bed, Mozart’s mother would play an unresolved cadence.” How fantastic is that?Compelled to finish the composition he races to the piano…
